Generational Curses vs. Generational Patterns: What’s Really Holding Us Back

We love to say: “I’m breaking generational curses.”
And yes, that phrase hits deep. But here’s the thing: sometimes what we call a curse is really just a pattern. When we label it a curse, it feels heavy. Mysterious. Like something we need divine intervention to fix. But a pattern? That’s something we can trace. Something we can name. And if it’s a cycle. . . cycles can be interrupted. Cycles can be healed.
Let’s be real.
If your mom was always stressed about bills… If your grandma always said, “hold onto every penny”… If every holiday came with quiet tension about “who’s gonna cover what”…
Then you probably learned without anyone saying it out loud that money equals fear, scarcity, or obligation.
That’s not a curse. That’s modeling. That’s repetition.
That’s survival passed down, generation to generation.
And here’s the good news: if it’s a pattern, it can be shifted.
Here’s how you start disrupting money patterns in your family:
✨ Spot the pattern. What’s the recurring theme around money in your family? Is it overspending during holidays? Silence around debt? Giving until there’s nothing left for yourself?
✨ Trace it back. Who did you learn it from? And more importantly, why did they live that way? Was it fear? Was it love? Was it trauma? Understanding the “why” helps you release the shame and see that they were doing the best they could with what they had.
✨ Choose your interruption. If the pattern is avoidance, maybe your interruption is transparency. If it’s over-giving, maybe it’s setting a boundary. Patterns don’t end by accident. They end when someone says, “This stops with me.”
✨ Teach as you go. Healing doesn’t stop with you. Every time you talk honestly about money with your kids, your friends, your partner — you’re rewriting the script. You’re planting new seeds.
You’re not cursed. You’re carrying a story that was handed down. But now you hold the pen. Your healing is the interruption. Your healing is the rewrite.
